We present a study of the optical spectrum of the fascinating B[e] star Hen 2-90 based on new high-resolution observations taken with FEROS at the ESO 1.52m telescope in La Silla (Chile). The recent HST image of Hen 2-90 (Sahai et al. 2002) reveals a bipolar, highly ionized region, a neutral disk-like structure seen almost perfectly edge-on, and an intermediate region of moderate ionization. The slits of our observations cover the same innermost region of Hen 2-90 as the HST image, which allows...

This article is from International Journal of General Medicine , volume 7 . Abstract Background: Pseudomyxoma peritonei is an uncommon condition with an estimated incidence of one to two per million (worldwide) per year. It is characterized by the peritoneal deposition of mucinous tumors, most commonly of the appendix, and occasionally from the ovary, coupled by mucinous ascites. Case presentation: We report the case of a 76-year-old woman who presented with increased abdominal girth and...

This paper describes how it is possible to increase GP Computing Power via Volunteer Computing (VC) using the BOINC framework. Two experiments using well-known GP tools -Lil-gp & ECJ- are performed in order to demonstrate the benefit of using VC in terms of computing power and speed up. Finally we present an extension of the model where any GP tool or framework can be used inside BOINC regardless of its programming language, complexity or required operating system.

The star CD-42o11721 is a curious B[e] star sometimes pointed as an evolved B[e] supergiant and sometimes as a young HAeBe star, due to very uncertain or even unknown stellar parameters, especially the distance. We present a qualitative study of the numerous emission lines in our optical spectra and the classification of their line profiles, which indicate a...

A new classification system for carbon-rich stars is presented based on an analysis of 51 AGB carbon stars through the most relevant classifying indices available. The extension incorporated, that also represents the major advantage of this new system, is the combination of the usual optical indices that describe the photospheres of the objects, with new infrared ones, which allow an interpretation of the circumstellar environment of the carbon-rich stars. This new system is presented with the...

Optical observations from 1989 of the SMC B[e] supergiant star S23 revealed the presence of photospheric HeI absorption lines. In our high-resolution optical spectra from 2000, however, we could not identify any HeI line. The observed changes in spectral behaviour of S23 lead to different spectral classifications at different observing epochs. The aim of this research is, therefore, to find and discuss possible scenarios that might cause a disappearance of the photospheric HeI absorption lines...

(abridged) B[e] supergiants are known to possess geometrically thick dusty disks. Disk-forming wind models have, however, been found to be insufficient in reproducing the observed dust emission. This problem arises due to the severe assumption that, as for classical Be stars, the near-infrared excess emission originates in the disk. Modeling of the free-free and free-bound emission therefore results in an upper limit for the disk mass loss rate, hampering dust condensation in the disk. We...

We report the recovery of a spectroscopic event in eta Carinae in 1997/98 after a prediction by Damineli (1996). A true periodicity with P = 2020+-5 days (0.2% uncertainty) is obtained. The line intensities and the radial-velocity curve display a phase-locked behavior implying that the energy and dynamics of the event repeat from cycle to cycle. This rules out S Doradus oscillation or multiple shell ejection by an unstable star as the explanation of the spectroscopic events. A colliding-wind...

We report on the detection of [OI] emission lines in the high-resolution optical spectra of several Magellanic Cloud (MC) B[e] supergiants, which we took with FEROS at the ESO 1.52m telescope in La Silla (Chile). In addition, we model the [OI] line luminosities and show that the best location for the neutral oxygen material is the outflowing disk. In order to reproduce the observed line luminosities, we conclude that the disks must be neutral already very close to the stellar surface.

Migration policies in distributed evolutionary algorithms has not been an active research area until recently. However, in the same way as operators have an impact on performance, the choice of migrants is due to have an impact too. In this paper we propose a new policy (named multikulti) for choosing the individuals that are going to be sent to other nodes, based on multiculturality: the individual sent should be as different as possible to the receiving population. We have checked this policy...

The spectra of stars with the B[e] phenomenon are dominated by features that are related to physical conditions of circumstellar material around these objects and are not intrinsic to the stars. Because of this, they form a very heterogeneous group. This group contains objects with different evolutionary stages. Lamers et al. (1998) have suggested a new designation with five sub-groups, which indicate the evolutionary stage. They are: supergiants, pre-main sequence or Herbig Ae/Be, compact...

We present the enigmatic galactic unclassified B[e] star Hen 2-90. Its optical spectrum is discussed and analysed in terms of the forbidden emission lines coming from a non-spherical wind. The evolutionary phase of Hen 2-90 is discussed. We raise the question whether an interacting binary nature seems to be a possible solution to account for all observed characteristics.

B[e] supergiants are surrounded by large amounts of hydrogen neutral material, traced by the emission in the optical [OI] lines. This neutral material is most plausibly located within their dense, cool circumstellar disks, which are formed from the (probably non-spherically symmetric) wind material released by the star. Neither the formation mechanism nor the resulting structure and internal kinematics of these disks (or disk-like outflows) are well known. However, rapid rotation, lifting the...
